A Field Guide to the Light You Can't See

Everything your eyes can see — every colour, every shade — is a thin slice of one vast family of waves. Most of the family is invisible to you, and it's passing through the room right now.

One phenomenon, wearing many names

Radio, microwaves, the warmth of infrared, the colours you see, ultraviolet, X-rays, gamma rays — these all sound like different things, and we treat them as different technologies. They are the same thing: electromagnetic waves, ripples in the electric and magnetic fields that fill all of space. The only difference from one end of the family to the other is wavelength — how long each ripple is — and, with it, how much energy each particle of light, each photon, carries. Long, lazy waves at one end; short, fierce ones at the other. That's the entire distinction.

Here's the family, laid out from longest wave to shortest, with where you're most likely to meet each one:

Reading the guide

A few things are worth noticing as you scan it.

  • Visible light is a sliver. The band your eyes respond to is about a single octave, wedged into a spectrum that runs on for dozens of octaves in each direction. Optically, you are very nearly blind — and you never noticed, because evolution only gave you eyes for the narrow band where the Sun shines brightest and water is clear, the same sunlight the air scatters into a blue sky on its way down.
  • "Visible" is parochial. Other animals drew the line elsewhere. Bees see into the ultraviolet, reading patterns on flowers that are invisible to us; pit vipers sense the infrared glow of a warm mouse in total darkness. There's nothing special about our slice except that it happens to be ours.
  • The boundaries are conventions, not walls. Nothing changes abruptly at the edge of "visible." The spectrum is one smooth continuum; the names are just filing labels we've hung on it.

Why it's more than trivia

Reading the spectrum is how we read the universe. The colour of a star tells you its temperature, because a hot object glows across a predictable spread of wavelengths — the same glow of any warm body that once broke classical physics wide open. The northern lights shine in sharp, specific colours that name the very gases lighting up. And the reason you can see through glass at all is that glass happens to pass visible wavelengths while blocking the ultraviolet just beyond them — one pane, transparent and opaque at once, depending which part of the family you ask about.

The rainbow you can see is one octave out of dozens. Turn the dial past red, or below violet, and the universe is still blazing away — in colours evolution simply never bothered to give you eyes for.
