The Universe Is Getting Bigger, Everywhere at Once

Look at the sky and it seems fixed. It isn't. Nearly every galaxy beyond our own little neighborhood is racing away from us — and the universe is doing something stranger than "flying apart."

The raisin-bread picture

Imagine a lump of raisin-bread dough rising in the oven. The raisins don't crawl through the dough; the dough swells and carries them along. Sit on any raisin and look around — every other raisin drifts away from you. A raisin twice as far recedes twice as fast, because there is twice as much dough swelling in between.

That is Hubble's law in miniature: recession speed is proportional to distance. We see exactly this in the real sky — the more distant a galaxy, the faster it flees, its light stretched toward the red. Knowing how distant, though, means climbing a ladder of rulers, each calibrating the next. Run that motion backward and the whole scene collapses into a hot, dense beginning.

You are not the center

Here is what trips people up. From your raisin, you look like the center — everything flees from you. But every other raisin sees precisely the same thing. There is no special raisin. The expansion has no center because it is happening everywhere at once.

Now swap the bread for the surface of a balloon, dots inked on with a marker. Inflate it: every dot recedes from every other, and no dot is "the middle" of the surface.

"What is it expanding into?"

The honest, slightly maddening answer is: nothing. Space is not expanding into a bigger empty room. The stretching is a property of space itself — not a motion through some larger space that contains it.

Only the surface of the balloon stands in for space. That surface has no edge and no center, yet it still grows. The universe needs no "outside" the way the balloon does; if there is a beyond, we can't see it and don't need it to explain anything.

One more correction: galaxies aren't hurtling through space like shrapnel. The space between them is growing. Locally, gravity and electromagnetism win — your body, the Earth, the galaxy itself are bound tightly and don't stretch. Only across the vast, near-empty gulfs between galaxy clusters does the expansion outrun gravity's grip.

Slowing, then speeding

For decades everyone assumed all that gravitating mass — most of it invisible — would slowly rein the expansion in. Then in the 1990s the measurements came back the wrong way. The expansion is accelerating, driven by something pushing space apart that we still cannot name.

That same stretching does something you can check with your own eyes: it reddens and dims the light of the most distant galaxies until they fade from view entirely, a good part of why the night sky is dark rather than blazing.

So the universe is getting bigger — everywhere, all at once, and lately in a hurry.
