Why Metal Feels Colder Than Wood at the Same Temperature
Touch the metal leg of a table, then the wooden top. The metal feels colder. Both have been sitting in the same room all day. Where does the difference come from?
Your skin can't measure temperature
Start with the fact that ruins the intuition: the metal and the wood are the same temperature. Leave a steel spoon and a wooden spoon on the counter overnight and a thermometer reads the same number for both. Your hand insists otherwise — so your hand must be measuring something other than temperature.
It is. Skin doesn't sense how hot a thing is; it senses how fast heat is leaving you. Your fingers sit at around 30 °C, warmer than the room. Touch anything cooler and heat drains out of your skin into it — always that direction, warm to cool, never the reverse on its own. The nerves report that drain, and read it as "cold."
Metal is a thief; wood is a blanket
The difference between the two is how quickly each carries that heat away. Metal is a superb conductor: it has loose electrons free to shuttle energy, so it whisks warmth out of your finger almost as fast as your finger can supply it. The spot you touch barely warms up, the outflow keeps roaring, and your nerves shout "cold."
Wood is the opposite — a poor conductor, an insulator. The patch you touch warms up to match your skin almost at once and then just sits there, because wood can't pass the heat along to the rest of itself. With the outflow choked off, your nerves report almost nothing. It feels neutral, even cosy.
"Cold" isn't a property of the metal. It's the feeling of your own body heat leaving in a hurry.
The tell
Here's how you know this is right. On a scorching day, step barefoot from a wooden deck onto a metal manhole cover. Now the metal feels hotter than the wood, not colder — because now the heat is rushing the other way, out of the hot metal and into your foot, and metal pours it in just as fast as it sucked it out before.
Your hand was never a thermometer. Temperature and heat are not the same thing — a confusion that runs all the way down to the coldest experiments physicists can do. Your hand is a flow meter, and metal, cold or hot, always moves heat in a hurry.
